Michael Cook is a commercial photographer and public artist specializing in photographing underground infrastructure for public and specialty communications. He produces distinctive images that are immediately accessible and engaging to non-technical audiences, while maintaining a high degree of documentary and archival information.
There are comparatively few commercial photographers that have worked underground, and even fewer with significant experience photographing municipal and utility infrastructure. Michael Cook has spent a decade researching, imaging and building a unique visual approach to built, underground spaces.
Cook's photographs have been exhibited in a number of high-profile public installations, including exhibits for the 2013 Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival and the 2014 Doors Open Toronto Festival. His images have also been published in Maclean's Magazine, The Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, and Canadian Business, and featured on The Atlantic Cities, BLDGBLOG, and Azure Magazine.
